Nuclear weapons are dangerous devices that can obliterate entire cities at the push of a button. However, despite the end of the Cold War, the danger of nuclear weapons remains virtually unchanged, and thousands of nuclear warheads still stand ready to be deployed and fired on warning.

Mayors for Peace is an international NGO based in Hiroshima, Japan that brings together 1,578 cities in 120 countries and regions to build a nuclear-free world. It is designed to lift the voices of cities and its citizens to protest against nuclear proliferation and raise awareness among mayors, citizens, and national leaders to the fact that cities are in fact still being targeted for annihilation, even though the International Court of Justice has found this threat itself to be a war crime. Furthermore, Mayors for Peace demands that nuclear weapon states fulfill their promise to “negotiate in good faith” about the abolishment of all nuclear weapons.

In response to the increasing threat of nuclear proliferation, Mayors for Peace has launched an emergency effort called the 2020 Vision Campaign to eliminate all nuclear weapons worldwide by 2020. 2006 marked the 10th anniversary of the International Court of Justice advisory opinion that, “The threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, and in particular the principles and rules of humanitarian law.” Mayors for Peace honored this landmark moment by launching Phase II of the 2020 Vision Campaign. Phase II placed emphasis on the Good Faith Challenge, a demand that all governments abide by the ICJ statement that, “There exists an obligation to pursue in good faith and bring to a conclusion negotiations leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects under strict and effective international control.” In addition, Mayors for Peace has also initiated the Cities Are Not Targets (CANT) project to demand assurance from nuclear weapon states that no cities are targets of nuclear attack.
